ALAN COOKE IS WORLD OVER 40 SINGLES CHAMPION

ETTA CONFERENCE AND VOLUNTEER AWARDS DINNER

16/17 SEPTEMBER 2006 - LILLESHALL

This year's conference will focus on the opportunities open to table tennis as we lead up to 2012, with keynote presentations from three of the highest ranking sports administrators in Britain.

There will be a number of opportunities for you to get updates on many areas of our sport and to see members of the England team past and present in action. You will also have an opportunity to put bat to ball yourself on the Saturday evening, prior to The ETTA Volunteer Awards Dinner.

The conference is being heavily subsidised via the Tom Blunn administrators' fund and spaces are strictly limited, so send in your application as soon as possible to ensure a place. All leagues and PremierClubs have been sent application forms and copies are available on request from the ETTA or available to download from the ETTA Website.... >more

NATIONAL VOLUNTEER AWARDS 2006

Many of our clubs and leagues have key volunteers; coaches, press officers or behind the scene's volunteers who give time and effort above and beyond what would normally be expected. Where would we be without them? The National Volunteer Awards are a great opportunity to recognise and celebrate their work.

The winners will be presented with a national award at the volunteer awards dinner, as part of the ETTA conference at Lilleshall on Saturday 16th September 2006. All nominees will receive a certificate.

This year we have included some new categories aimed at club and community based volunteers and young volunteers. So don’t delay, nominate your key volunteers as soon as possible, but no later than the closing date of Monday 28th August 2006. All leagues and PremierClubs have been sent a nomination form, additional copies are available directly from the ETTA or can be downloaded from the ETTA Website....>more

UK SCHOOL GAMES

Table Tennis is one of five sports to be initially included in the recently announced UK school games. The inaugural event will take place in Glasgow in September 2006 and will also feature Swimming, Athletics, Gymnastics and Fencing. The games will become an annual event staged in different host cities along the principles of Olympic/Paralympic Games. The games will provide a home for home country international championships, with the competition format determined by each sport to fit their competition review work.

The event will be used as a development tool to bring about systemic structural change in a number of sports; modernise event presentation for young people and bring a new profile, look and feel of competitive sport for school age children. This event is UK wide and offers development funding to assist a review of the Table Tennis competition structure...>more

Volunteer co-ordinator incentive scheme

448 vouchers valued at £4976 have recently been sent to 29 clubs and leagues who successfully applied for funding to implement a volunteer support plan. A second phase of the scheme is being rolled out in September with a closing date of 31st December 06.

To be eligible registered Premier Clubs and local leagues must have a named Volunteer Coordinator, a person whose key role is to help recruit new volunteers and match their skills to roles within a club or league.

Each successful club/league will receive vouchers from the ETTA (worth up to £200), which can be used to implement the plan. The funding is restricted for up to six projects per region. Decisions will be made regionally, based on support of a broad range of volunteers, particularly young volunteers.

ETTA REGIONAL COACHING

The ETTA coaching provision has recently been modified to meet the Long Term Development of our young players, particularly at Regional level.

At regional level ‘Performance Centres’ will provide important training opportunities for selected players in a particular catchment area. All the existing Development Centres and High Performance centres will come under the name of ‘Performance Centres’, with the one exception and that is the High Performance Centre in the East Midlands which has the strength of players necessary to be given the ‘High’ status.

The ‘best’ players in their age group from the whole region will also be selected to attend more intensive training days on a monthly basis. A scheme, subsidised by the ETTA to hold Regional Performance Squad Training over weekends is being piloted and if successful will be extended next season. Regional weekend training has proved to be very successful abroad and Steen Kyst Hansen (ETTA Technical Manager) is keen to have the same provision here.

It will ensure that more young players throughout the country receive high level coaching similar to that provided at the Youth Development Squad with the intention of improving the overall standard.

The Regional Performance provision both at ‘Performance Centres’ and ‘Regional Performance Squads’ will be important in the ETTA talent ID programme and selection into Youth Development Squad and National Squads.

Players attending Regional Performance Training will also be eligible to be selected to represent their region at the National Regional Squad Championships in April 2007.
