2005
YEAR OF THE VOLUNTEER
2005
is the Year
of the Volunteer, a year-long celebration of the amazing work
volunteers do and a call to action to get more and more of us
volunteering.
Early
in 2004, Chancellor Gordon Brown designated 2005 as the Year of
the Volunteer. The Home Office, as the government department with
responsibility for encouraging active citizenship, is working in
partnership with two well-established volunteering organisations
Volunteering England and Community Service Volunteers (CSV) to
coordinate the Year.
Aims
of the Year
The
Year's main aims are to:
-
Increase
the number of volunteers, particularly individuals from
marginalised groups and young people
-
Open
up more volunteering opportunities in the public and voluntary
sector
-
Raise
the profile of the work volunteers are doing nationwide
-
Thank
volunteers everywhere for their time and commitment
August
is designated as the month for sport.
If your club would like to get involved in the Year of the
Volunteer campaign, go to Volunteer
organisations and the Year of the Volunteer.

Jan-Ove
Waldner has secured an almost mythical status within the sport
following his heroics at the Olympic Games in Athens last August.
The English Table Tennis Association is delighted to announce that
this living legend will be competing on these shores, for probably
the last time, on July 23rd 2005.
After
the remarkable success of last year’s BBC televised competition
at the magnificent Fairfield Concert Hall in Croydon, the Super
Circuit returns to South London in the form of the Table Tennis
Masters. The prize money for the one-day event is a staggering
$175,000, with the winner pocketing a cheque for $70,000 (about £40,000).....
