Trophies galore!

Chris Binns Presenting the Mizzy Award to Sam Cowan

Chris Binns making the inaugural presentation of the Mizzy Trophy to Sam Cowan

Ellenborough TTC was honored to have Chris Binns make the presentations at its end of season junior presentation evening on Saturday 2nd July.  The inaugural award of the cut crystal glass Mizzy Trophy was an especially poignant moment as it was donated by Chris to the club in memory of his very special table tennis playing son, Myles, who tragically died in a fatal car accident earlier this year.  The trophy is awarded to the junior member with the highest average in the North Middlesex Table Tennis League which this season was Sam Cowan with an impressive 79% in the Premier Division.

Chris Binns and Daniel Wright

The Eddie Jones Trophy was presented to Daniel Wright as the most improved junior over the season. Wright’s rise has been truly meteoric jumping 14 places (from 28 to 14) on the very competitive England Cadet Boys ranking list, winning the Boys U14 title at the prestigious Chesham 2* tournament and finishing runner-in the Boys Singles U15 event at the Cheltenham 4* and the banded Junior (U18) Boys Singles at the Derby 4*. Locally he won the North Middlesex Table Tennis League’s Cadet (U15) Boys Singles, Boys Doubles and Mixed Doubles. Daniel still has another year at Cadet (U15) level and he has an important season ahead of him. In the Boys Junior British League he took the jump of two divisions in his stride as Ellenborough TTC finished runners-up in Division 2a. Daniel also starred in London Region’s success at the ETTA’s Regional Squad Championships in Doncaster beating Miles Chan (then ranked No. 15 in England and higher than Daniel at the time) deuce in the fifth in the final against East Midlands.

Chis Binns and Denise Payett

The John Danson Trophy was presented to 10 year old Denise Payet as the most promising youngster.  Denise was a double silver medalist at the National Championships, is the current Jack Petchey London Schools Table Tennis Girls U11 Individual Champion and proudly represented England in the four nations Primary School Championships.  She won the U11 Girls Singles titles at the Westfield 1* and Grantham 2* tournaments, and the U12 Singles title at the recent Cippenham Young Players Festival.  She finishes the season ranked No. 2 in the Girls U11 ranking list.

Jack Petchey awards were presented to:

Chris Binns with Arif Ahmet

Arif Ahmet who (amongst other things) led Ellenborough TTC to silver in the National Cadet League by winning all his games against Chelmsford and Twickenham Brunswick in a stunning display of table tennis on the final match day.  Arif has always showed a tremendous team attitude.

Aydin

Eda Aydin who, as well as winning countless U13 titles, was also invited to play in the prestigious Cadet Masters (where the top fourteen U15 Girls in the country all play each other).  She tasted team success as she led Ellenborough Girls British League Team to the Division 3 title and was part of the Middlesex team that won the Premier Division of the Cadet County Championships.  The other girl in the Middlesex team was Tin Tin Ho.

Chris Binns with Jasmine Chan

Jasmine Chan who was part of the Enfield  bronze medal winning team at the Youth Games (which included a memorable win over Tiana Dennison) and who finished runner-up in U11 Girls Singles at the recent Jack Petchey London Schools Championships.  Jasmine also finished third in the U12 Girls Singles at the Cippenham Summer Festival.

Chris Binns with Kevin Fang

Kevin  Fang for his hard work and improvement in his shot  technique.

Chris Binns with Charlie Izatt

Charlie Izzatt was awarded a Jack Petchey Excellence in Leadership award.  Not only does he run Saturday mornings for the juniors single handed, Charlie is always there to do all the odd jobs around the club and without him the club would not function.

Dale Millett and Beau Durman had other commitments on the evening, but Jack Petchey awards had been presented to them earlier in the season.

Dale Millett

Dale Millett for his dedication and continuous improvement throughout the season.  He was the U15 Boys Consolation Runner-Up at the BATTS One Star Junior Open.

Inspired by the award of the Mizzy trophy and Chris’s speech, Sam Cowan and Daniel Wright led Enfield Boys to gold at the London Youth Games on Sunday beating Wandsworth in an epic final,.  The other members of the team were Vincent Stacey and Ryan Gaveglia.  Earlier in the day Enfield had beaten beating Barnet, Kingston, Tower Hamlets and (in the semi-final) Hillingdon.  Enfield Girls (Eda Aydin, Samantha Lai, Denise Payet and Jasmine Chan) finished with a bronze with wins over Ealing and Wandsworth (twice) before going out to Tower Hamlets in a well-fought out semi-final.  This was a very fine performance by such a young team.

On hearing the news Chris Binns said “I’m delighted for the kids: inspiring youngsters is what it is all about!  Although Myles’s life was cut tragically short, he lived life to the full and I have been overwhelmed by the messages posted on his Facebook page I set-up in his memory.  It was clear that he touched the lives of more young people than I ever realized through his support and encouragement of others, and the most appropriate way of me honoring Myles is to inspire kids to fulfill their dreams”.  Chris went on to joke that “If my family are privileged enough to be invited to the Junior Open Evening next year, maybe I should bring some club classics along and get the disco going.  ‘Gold’ by Spandau Ballet might be fitting”.

Is there a more successful community-based table tennis club in the country?
