The boys’ team of Sam Cowan, Daniel Wright, Ryan Gaveglia and Vincent Stacey was managed by club coach, Terry Wilson in the absence of Nick McKoy who was unavoidably absent. All the boys played their part, as did the girls’ team of Eda Aydin, Samantha Lai, Denise Payet and Jasmine Chan.
A long fought-out day saw table tennis of a very high standard of both skill and sportsmanship befitting the London Youth Games, with Enfield’s boys and girls fully playing their part.
The girls team, managed by club coach, Sureyya Aydin, defeated Ealing 5-0 and Wandsworth 4-1, twice before going out to Tower Hamlets in a well-fought out semi-final to win a well-deserved bronze medal for the Borough. This was a very fine performance by such a young team. Favourites, Westminster were gold medal winners.
After pulling out all the stops in the early rounds against Barnet, Kingston and Tower Hamlets, the Enfield boys continued their quest for gold by beating a fine Hillingdon side in the semi-final before meeting Wandsworth in the final. Sam Cowan and Daniel Wright were selected for this challenge and both did the Borough proud in a match that brought the house down. Enfield held on to win a terrific match played in a sporting manner befitting the London Youth Games.
