Denise Payet was the best English finisher at the Finlandia Open, ending in 16th position, one ahead of Karina Le Fevre.

The duo were part of an English contingent also including Lois Peake, Evie Collier and Maria Tsaptsinos in the women’s events and Matt Leete in the men’s.

Payet’s finish represented an improvement on her ranking of 22 going into the event and included a good 4-2 victory over the seventh-ranked player Maryia Kuchuck of Belarus.

A total of 55 women competed in the singles, with Le Fevre just missing out on the top 16, finishing just below her ranking of 14th as a defeat to No 3 seed Alina Arlouskaya, also of Belarus, proved pivotal.

Peake finished 20th – exactly the same as her ranking – while Collier was 38th from a ranking of 30th and Tsaptsinos 51st after a tough run of matches, having been ranked 12th initially.

Leete was ranked 29th in the men’s singles and ended up in 74th place in a field of 116.

In the team events, Tsaptsinos and Peake were the most successful combination, reaching the third round.
