Ellenborough’s Red Nose Day raises over £1000

On Friday 15th March Rob Costa, the newest addition to Ellenborough’s Committee, masterminded our first ever participation in Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day and, at the last count, had raised a total of £1,087 for the charity!   Rob (pictured here with Leon The Magician) had brought up the idea and got the go-ahead only two or three weeks before the event so getting it all together at such short notice was quite an achievement.

The day started with an ‘open house’ for free table tennis from early morning until 4.30 in the afternoon, with all participants invited to make donations to the charity.  In return, they had the opportunity to receive expert one-to-one coaching from the likes of Dave Langham, Gergely Urban (Urfi), Melvyn Waldman and Gordon Izatt.  They also had the chance to use the robot training machine and to mix and practice with people from various clubs, including Mayfield TTC and The Barnet Centre.   This was a great success and attracted generous donations from those who took part.  Many thanks go to the coaches and others who volunteered their time to make this part of the day such a success.

There was a break from 4.30 to 6.30 p.m. for our regular junior coaching and then preparations started for the evening’s fundraising. Club members were invited to come along with friends and family to enjoy a social evening with a variety of entertainment and again were given ample opportunity to donate to the good cause. Whilst everyone was arriving and socialising, Leon The magician was mingling with the crowd and baffling all concerned with his unique close-up magic skills. Rob had prepared a delicious buffet meal for everyone, some excellent gateaux for dessert were donated by Colin Miller’s daughter-in-law Emily and the bar was ably manned by club member Roger Bourdon, who sported a dashing red and white nose for almost the entire evening!

The evening’s entertainment included live music and songs from our own professional singer songwriter and all-round musician Jim Litherland, a performance by Leon The Magician, stand-up comedy from club member Rosetta DeLisle, dancing, a Red Nose table quiz and some enjoyable salsa dancing lessons which ended in a demonstration by the tutor and her partner. A raffle was also held, which offered a vast number and variety of prizes, from a meal for two at a local restaurant and various bottles of alcoholic beverages to table tennis and other sports equipment, chocolates, toiletries, a special edition DVD set and more! Over 50 prizes were donated in total and thanks go to the table tennis suppliers, members, friends and local businesses who kindly donated items to support our efforts. Some 50 to 60 people attended the evening’s gathering and a good time was had by all.

Sincere thanks go to all the entertainers, coaches, volunteers and others who made the whole day so enjoyable and especially to Rob, who came up with the idea and made it happen.

Donations can still be made by going to www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ellenboroughttc, clicking on the ‘donate’ button and following the instructions.
