Ellenborough 2 SBL Weekend 1
7th & 8th September

Ellenborough 2 British League Report
The newly formed Ellenborough 2nd team had a strong start during the first round of matches in the National C British League divison. With Ryan Gaveglia captaining the team, Ellenborough players Semi Idowu, Kevin Fang, Kin Wa Chan (Saturday) and Iain Francis (Sunday) were ready to showcase their abilities on the table, with an overall good performance of ¾ total matches won.

Saturday began with a shaky start against Ashford 1, losing 6-3 which consisted of a lackluster performance in the double with former juniors Ryan and Kevin, and only three out of eight singles matches won, one from Semi against Artur Lopata, and Kevin winning both of his singles against Michael Silver and Artur Lopata as the lower positioned team member. Whether it was nerves or simply rustiness, this was a wake up call for the team to kick into high gear, warm up and try to start racking up wins to aim for promotion.

The team did just that, winning the 2nd Saturday match 6-3 against ArchwayPeterborough TTC 5. A recurring theme throughout the weekend were poorer than expected doubles performances, with Kevin and Kin Wa losing the doubles 3-1, but a 6-2 record for singles this round was the difference that allowed for the win – Semi, Kevin and Kin Wa would win both of their singles matches, whilst team captain Ryan struggled to find form on this day, which would actually lead Ryan to change his equipment for the next day and (spoiler!) play better the next day. Overall, a decent performance on Saturday but one that would leave room for improvement the next day.

Sunday began with a match against TableTennisDaily 2, with the opposing team visibly struggling in the singles against the new Ellenborough team which saw Iain Francis replace Kin Wa, with the only singles match lost being Ryan against Joseph Sheppard. Again, while the doubles were lost, a very comfortable 7-2 win gave the newly formed team momentum to bring to the second round, and still left the team in a position of promotion if the second match were won.

The second match was indeed won, but not without great difficulty against a young and strong New House TTC 1, who gave the top team Wensum 2 trouble. The match was won 5-4, with Iain taking the win at 4-4 after a rocky back and forth between Ellenborough and New House. Kevin won both of his singles, which greatly helped the team in this particular match as Harry Law defeated both Semi and Ryan, with Semi winning one match and Ryan unfortunately losing both matches. Semi and Iain pulled out the first doubles win in the team’s history, which left the match score at 4-4, with Iain pulling off an impressive, ruthless 3-0 win against Tom Clack, which solidified the win and left the team in high spirits at the end of the weekend.

With 4 matches played and 3 hard fought wins, it has been a great start for the Ellenborough 2nd Team, with the team remaining optimistic for the next weekend of matches! Hopefully we can play at our highest level against the remaining strong teams in our division, and stand a chance of promotion.
