Senior British League Weekend 1
7th & 8th September at

Ellenborough 1st Team lose first four matches in SBL Division A2

After 3 years of not losing a single match and consecutive promotions from the bottom division to division A2,  Ellenborough 1st team rapid rise to the top came to an abrupt halt.

Team captain Roger Pyle had strengthened the squad considerably during the summer, but with both Andy Trott and new signing Jimmy Walsh playing for England Vetts in Scotland, it was left to a team of Mitchell Jones, new signings Miles Chan and James Sprackling, along with Daniel Wright and Sara Williams to represent Ellenborough on this first weekend of SBL.

Ellenborough started their matches on Saturday morning against Woodford Wells 1. The first game was between Ellenborough’s number 1 Mitchell Jones and Woodfords number 2, Zoltan Hooszu, Mitchell who has been training really hard this summer looked extremely sharp in dispensing of Zolie  11-6 11-4 11-3 to give Ellenborough the perfect start!! Next up was new signing Miles Chan who is an ex England cadet international, Miles has been concentrating on his education for the past 5 years so has not played that much. Miles showed a lot of his old ability in his first game losing a tight match to Hungarian Adam Fuzes, who has an English rating which would put him in the top 40 in England, Miles played really well to extend Adam to too a 5th and final set which lost he 11-7. James Sprackling was next to make his Ellenborough debut, James who has been a regular Middlesex senior player for the past 20 years was unlucky in losing 3-2 in 5 close sets with Woodfords number 4. This left  Ellenborough home grown talent, Daniel Wright to get Ellenborough back into the match, but it was not to be as Daniel lost 3-0 to Bryan Kwan. The Match finished 7-2 in the favour of Woodford Wells with Mitchell wining his remaining match 3-1 against Adam Fuzes.

The Afternoon match was against Wensum, again Ellenborough started well with Mitchell Jones beating Wensum number 1 and England ranked number 58 Neil Charles 3-1. Miles was next up, but again he lost in 5 close sets, Miles will certainly start to win games when he drops to number 4 in the second round of matches when the team will be at full strength. James won his next match 3-1 against Andy Hawes and Mitchell won his second match, but with the doubles being lost in 5 and an out of form Daniel Wright losing his 2 games Ellenborough were defeated 6-3.

With the high standard of play in this division Roger made the decision of dropping Daniel Wright for the second days play, Daniel who is an extremely talented player has been concentrating on his work commitments and admitted he has not practised enough to be competitive at this level, so in came Sara Williams England’s number 1 ladies veteran to play at number 4.

Sundays first match was against Draycott who have some exceptional young players who are very highly ranked amongst the best juniors in  England. This led to another loss for Ellenborough this time 8-1, with the only bright point being a win for James against Draycott’s number 4 and Sara going down 3-1 and 3-2 against 2 top England Juniors, with a bit of luck Sara could have won both matches!!

The final match was against the divisions favourites Table Tennis Daily, a very strong team which included 3 players who have all been ranked in the top 20 in England, Tom Maynard who has been as high as number 12, Garth Kinlocke and Umair Mauthoor. First up was Miles who played very well in defeat  losing 3-1 to Table Tennis Daily’s number 1 Tom Maynard, Mitchell got Ellenborough back into the match by beating Garth 3-1. It was always going to be a big ask for Ellenborough to get any sort of positive result out of this match even with a full strength team, but the whole team put up a great fight and there were some exceptional displays from Mitchell and Sara, Mitchell losing 3-2 to Tom Maynard in high quality game with some incredible rallies and Sara putting up a great fight against Umair losing 3-1, also the doubles  was a very close match with Sara and Mitchell going down 3-2 to Tom and Garth

With 4 matches played and no points on the board it was a tough start for Ellenborough, but with both Andy and Jimmy to come into the squad for the next round of matches I am certain things will improve. We have also played 3 out of the top 4 sides in this 10 team division, a realistic goal for this new look team will be a mid-table finish.
