Senior British League Weekend 2

Ellenborough 1st team back to winning ways

After the disappointment of the first round of matches, Ellenborough SBL 1st team got back to winning ways with 3 wins from 4 matches from the second weekend

Roger Pyle (Team Captain) had the luxury of being able to pick from a full strength squad which made all the difference, Roger preference being experience over youth. Into the team for Saturday came Andy Trott and Jimmy Walsh to replace Miles Chane and Daniel Wright, they were joined by Mitchell Jones and James Sprackling. The first match was a very close encounter with Kingfisher 1st team which resulted in a 5-4 win with the hero being Andy Trott with 2 wins out of 2, he was backed up by a solid team performance as Mitchell, Jimmy and James all won 1 each. The afternoons match was against a strong looking Milton Keynes side who are lying in second place, but they were also dispatched 5-4, the result could have been even more impressive, but for Andy hurting his back in beating Jon Hall which resulted in him having to concede his second match and Jimmy Walsh having to concede his second match due to him feeling unwell.

Roger had to change the team for Sunday with Andy having to withdraw due to his bad back, so in came Sara Williams at number 4 with Jimmy and James moving up to play at 2 and 3 behind Mitchell at 1. First up were Brighton who were beater 6-3, Jimmy Walsh who had recovered from his sickness was very impressive in beating Mark Scutts England’s number 52 ranked man. The afternoons match was against Peterborough Archway a game on paper we should have really won, but it was not to be as a tired looking Ellenborough were beaten 6-3, Mitchell winning 2 and Sara and Jimmy winning the doubles, it could have been different if Sara hadn’t lost 2 very close matches both in the final game.

With only 1 match of the first half of the season to be played against bottom side Finsbury, Ellenborough now sit in mid table. If Roger can pick from a fully fit squad for the remaining matches a realist finishing position would be 3rd or 4th out of the 10 teams.
