Ellenborough Ladies VBL Report
Final Weekend 2018/19

The Ellenborough Veterans’ British League squad of Sandy Nash, Tumay Ekrem, June Nelson, Faith Frankel and Carol Eckersley returned to Derby Arena to complete their Veterans’ British League campaign over the weekend of 23rd and 24th February 2019. The 2018/19 event was held over two weekends, with the first weekend played back in September 2018.

A close division 1 comprising of eight teams awaited, and two sides still to play before the division split to 1a and 1b.

The team started the weekend in third place, but level on points with the teams in 2nd (Five Counties) and 4th place (Wheelers Fusion of Ladies).   Briber IPS Tigers started the second weekend three points ahead on 9 points, with the next three all on 6 points.

Ellenborough had only just survived in this division last season, after promotion from Division 2 the season before.

The Saturday started very well, with a win over HEL Ladies in the first Saturday match. Two wins each for Tumay and Carol secured two points for the team.  This was followed quickly by a draw versus Lyncrest, with wins for Sandy and Tumay.  Unlucky not to get another win, with Carol only losing out 13-11 in the 5th in one of her matches.  This secured the team safely in the top  half of the division for the split.

Unfortunately, none of the three games faced in the new Division 1a went quite Ellenborough Ladies way. All ended with 4-2 losses.  Highlights were Tumay and Sandy both winning one each against IPS, Tumay and Carol winning one each against eventual winners Wheelers and Tumay winning both her games against the Lyncrest team. This included a great reversal of her result to one of their team and again unlucky not to get a draw, with June reaching match points in her first game and chances to win against Helen Shields 3-0.  Just missing out on another draw against the Lyncrest team that pipped Ellenborough Ladies to 3rd place.

This placed the team in a very respectable 4th place overall in the strong 1st Division.

Well done to the division winners, Wheelers Fusion of Ladies and runners up, Bribar IPS Tigers for your superb results and for gaining promotion this year. Many thanks and well done to all of the ladies who took part and represented Ellenborough Table Tennis Club.
